Bodom: Jeremy White isn't only CodeWeavers's CEO, you have a private life. Tell us, how spend you free time? (you have a pets, child, wife? how old are you?)
J. White: I'm 41, married, and have 2 boys aged 10 and 13. I spend most of my free time with my family. I volunteer with my son's school chess club as a coach (that's why I'm never in the office on Friday afternoons :-) . I also volunteer with cub scouts, and then we all hop on our Wii and play Mario Kart Wii (although my oldest son consistently beats my wife and I now :-().
Bodom: When and How you have idea of "CrossOver" (To the start CrossOver Office)? What's the reason of this choice?
J. White: We launched CrossOver Office in April of 2002 as a move of complete desperation. Our initial round of investment capital had run out (turns out that 2001 was *not* the year of the Linux Desktop <grin>), and we had parted ways with Lindows. That left us with only a little income. But our greatest joy was selling a little product called CrossOver Plugin. So we though, heck, since we can run Office 2000 now, why not try to make a product out of it? That was how CrossOver Office was born, and fortunately, it has supported us and our work on Wine ever since.
Bodom: The Birth of Open Office, as it change your mission?
J. White: No, no, that's all good. We like Free Software, and we're happy when people are able to choose Open Office over Microsoft Office. I'm all about choice - I like to give people more choices, not less. I like people to be *able* to choose Mac or Linux, and not worry about whether or not their favorite Windows applications will work.
Bodom: Maybe this is the reasons of your choice to make other software like: CrossOver Pro Linux, CrossOver Pro Mac, CrossOver Games for Linux, and CrossOver Games for Mac. Have i Right?
J. White: Sure; we're trying to help as many people as we can.
Bodom: What is the software that have more success between your buyers?
J. White: We do very well with Microsoft Office and games. We also provide a lot of joy for applications like Quicken, Project, and Visio, and the other applications we officially support. Beyond that, though, there are a wide range of applications that just work; to be honest, I think our customers get more total joy from unsupported applications than they do from supported ones.
Bodom: Why called the your software "Cross Over" and your company Codeweavers? Can you explain your choice?
J. White: CodeWeavers came first; that was the name of the company when I founded it in 1996. And we cannot call the company CrossOver; www.crossover.com is taken (and too expensive to buy), and there are other issues. But we thought 'CrossOver Office' was a very nice name for what we did, so we went with it. We've thought about renaming the company and perhaps the products to match, but at this point, we fear that CrossOver is too valuable to change.
Bodom: In your software, there is a core of Wine Project. Wine is an software open source; why don't use a Gnu/Gpl licenses for CrossOver? Maybe, the Gnu/Gpl isn't a more competitive?
J. White: The heart and soul of CrossOver is Wine, and all of our hard work goes into Wine, and Wine is LGPL. The little bit that is not Wine we keep proprietary, mostly as a way to help encourage people to support our efforts.
Bodom: How long time for support of Microsoft Office 2007?
J. White: Should be very soon; hopefully only weeks away.
Bodom: Can you talk about the future project of Codeweavers?
J. White: Well, the goal is to run every Windows application. The path to that is still quite long, though.
Bodom: How many people job for you?
J. White: We have about 23 people around the world.
Bodom: Your project have been a great popolarity, did you think to get this popolarity?
J. White: I never dreamed of doing something this important when I was young; I'm constantly honored and flattered by all of the support and attention we have
received. Of course, there are days when I think that people should pay *more* attention to us, but then I remember that being interviewed by folks from Italy is really a remarkable honor <grin>.
Bodom: Do you want to say some things to the italian pubblic of tiempolibresite.com?

Bodom: Jeremy White non è soltando l' Amministratore della Codeweavers, tu hai anche una vita privata. Dicci, come trascorri il tuo tempo libero, hai animali? una moglie?
J. White: I ho 41 anni, sono sposato e ho due figli, uno di 10 e l'altro di 13 anni. Io trascorro molto del mio tempo libero con la mia famiglia. Sono un "allenatore" volontario per il club di scacchi nella scuola di miei figli, questo perchè il venerdi pomeriggio non sono in ufficio :-). Io sono anche volontario negli scouts e quando siamo tutti a casa, saltiamo sulla nostra Wii e giochiamo con Mario Kart Wii, anche se mio figlio più grande costantemente batte mia moglie ed adesso anche me.
Bodom: Quando e come hai avuto l'idea del "CrossOver Linux" (prima conosciuto come Crossover Office? Quali sono state le ragioni di questa scelta?
J. White: Nell'aprile del 2002, lanciai CrossOver Office ero spinto da una completa disperazione. Il nostro iniziale capitale di investimento si era esaurito e pensare che il 2001 doveva essere l'anno del Linux Desktop, e quindi partimmo con Lindows. Che ci ha lasciato con un pò di capitale. La nostra più grande gioia era di vendere un piccolo prodotto chiamato CrossOver Plugin. Perchè non provare a tirar fuori un prodotto dal plugin, per far funzionare office 2000? E' fortunatamente è nato CrossOver Office, da quel momento grazie a questo software abbiamo potuto mantenere il nostro lavoro e noi.
Bodom: La nascita di open office, coma ha cambiato la vostra missione?
J. White: No no, è tutto apposto. A Noi piace il software libero, e noi siamo felice quando le persone scelgono Open Office invece di Ms Office. Io sono sempre per la scelta - Mi piace che le persone abbiano più scelte e non meno e le persone siano capaci di scegliere tra Mac o linux senza il dubbio che le loro applicazioni preferite Windows andranno o meno.
Bodom: Forse è questa la razione che vi ha spinti a creare altri software come: CrossOver Pro Linux, CrossOver Mac, CrossOver Games. Dico Bene?
J. White: Sicuro; Noi aiutiamo le persone come possiamo
Bodom: Qual'è il software che ha più successo tra i vostri clienti?
J. White: Facciamo molto bene con MS Office e i giochi. Sono inoltre disponibile applicazioni come Quicken, Project, and Visio e molte altre applicazioni che supportiamo ufficialmente. Devi considerare che ci sono una vasta gamma di applicazioni che funzionano anche se non supportate ufficialmente.
Bodom: Perchè avete chiamato il vostro software "CrossOver" e la tua azienda Codeweavers? Puoi spiegarci questa scelta?
J. White: Iniziamo da Codeweaver, che è il nome dell'azienda fondata nel 1996. L'azienda non poteva chiamarsi CrossOver perchè il dominio www.crossover.com era stato preso è costava troppo per comprarlo, ma c'erano anche altr questioni. Mentre il programma lo abbiamo chiamato CrossOver Office perchè ci sembrava un bion nome per quello che aveva fatto. Ad un certo punto aveva pensato di cambiare nome alla compagnia ed anche al prodotto ma ormai è troppo prezioso per cambiarlo.
Bodom: Il tuo programma si basa su Wine Project. Wine è un prodotto su licenza Open Source. Perchè non usi la Licenza Grnu/Gpl per il CrossOver? Forse, questa non è molto competitiva?
J. White: Il cuore e l'anima di CrossOver è costituito da Wine e dal nostro duro lavoro, Wine è in licenza LGPL. Solo la parte che non è di Wine noi manteniamo proprietaria, soprattutto come modo per incoraggiare le persone a sostenere i nostri sfrozi.
Bodom: Quanto tempo ci vorrà per riuscire a supportare Ms Office 2007?
J. White: Dovrebbe essere molto presto; Se tutto va bene siamo a poche settimane di distanza.
Bodom: Puoi parlarci dei futuri progetti di Codeweavers?
J. White: Bene, Lo scopo e far andare ogni applicazione Windows. Il percoso è ancora lungo.
Bodom: Quante persone lavorano per te?
J. White: 23 persone in tutto il mondo.
Bodom: Tu pensavi che il tuo progetto avrebbe avuto questa popolaità?
J. White: Quando ero giovane non avrei mai pensato di fare una cosa così importante, I sono costantemente onorato e lusingato da tutto l'attenzione che riceviamo. Naturalmente ci sono giorni in cui penso che la gente dovrebbe pagare "di +", ma quando i ricordo di essere intervista da gente dall'Italia è davvero un impagabile onore.
