Bodom: Who is "David" in the real life? How old are you? How have you a child? Studies and other more (nazionality for sample)?
David: I was born and raised in California and have lived here all my life. I am 48 years old, I have been married 8 years (my wife is from Romania), and we have a cat.
Bodom: When you have the "wavPack" idea? What is the reason to make "WavPack?
David: I started working on digital audio projects in the early 1990s, experimenting with both lossless and lossy compression. I originally wrote the precursor to WavPack in about 1997. I didn't know about Shorten or LPAC, but I wanted to be able to archive full audio CD's as WAV files on a CD-R, but many would not fit. The first release of WavPack was in 1998, which makes it the oldest of the lossless compressors still being actively developed.
Bodom: Your project have been a great popolarity, did you think to get this popolarity?
David: No, it has been a surprise to me to see WavPack become as popular as it has. It has been especially gratifying to see WavPack support appear on hardware devices like portable music players and home media servers, and in the open source project FFmpeg.
Bodom: What is the future of "WavPack" project?
David: The next version will have an improvement to the quality of the hybrid mode (dynamic noise shaping) and I have added many new features to the winamp plugin (these are both available now as alpha versions). For me, the most interesting application of the WavPack hybrid mode is for distribution and storage of high-resolution audio (like 24/96) where conventional lossy codecs like MP3 and AAC don't make any sense and purely lossless codecs are too wasteful.
Bodom: And your future project?
David: About 5 months ago I started working for a startup company (www.livescribe.com) that has just started shipping it's first product: a pen that records both audio and what you write, and then links them together. It's very exciting work, but unfortunately does take some time away from WavPack!
Bodom: Why you don't use the open source license?
David: Well, I assume that you mean the GPL, because WavPack is released under another open source license (BSD). I choose the BSD license because
I wanted WavPack to be used as widely as possible in both commercial and free projects and the GPL is generally not well accepted for commercial applications.
Bodom: What is the your think about OGG Vorbis?
David: I have never used Vorbis myself (because I use WavPack), but I am happy to see support for it starting to appear on portables. It's great to have a free and open alternative to the "big boys".
Bodom: What is the your think about the Open Source?
David: I don't have particularly strong feelings about open source. I think open source is great (I use Linux at home), but I think there is nothing inherently wrong with commercial software and I even have some ideas for software applications I might write and try to sell in the future. However, I do feel strongly about open standards. I think that proprietary data and file formats are inherently monopolistic and do not serve the public well, and I have been happy to see governments (like the state of Massachusetts) start to understand the importance of this and move to require that state business be done only with open standards.
Bodom: Do you want to say some things to the italian pubblic of tiempolibresite.com?
David: I was surprised to notice recently that Italy is the biggest foreign visitor to the WavPack website. In the past it was Germany and Japan, but Italy now consistently beats them both! So I have to thank the Italian people for their support (and generous donations). Many years ago I visited Italy (Milano and Venezia) and really enjoyed the warmth of the Italian people and the beautiful countryside. I certainly plan to bring my wife back there one of these days!

Bodom: Chi è David nella vita reale? Quanti anni hai? Hai figli? ed altre curiosità?
David: I sono nato e cresciuto in California and vivo qui con mia moglie. I ho 48 anni e sono sposato da 8, mia moglie è rumena and noi abbiamo un gatto.
Bodom: Quando hai avuto l'idea di creare "wavpack"? quale sono state le motivazioni?
David: Agli inizi degli anni '90, ho iniziato a lavorare sui progetti audio digitali, sperimentando formati lossless e datalossy. Io ho scritto il precursore di WavPack nel 1997. Io volevo essere capce di archiviare dei cd audio come un Wav files su un cd-r, ma non ci stavano. La prima versione di WavPack è uscita nel 1998, questo fà di WavPack il più vecchio lossless sviluppato tutt'oggi.
Bodom: Pensavi che il tuo progetto acquistasse tanta popolarità?
David: No: è stata una sorpresa vedere che wavpack diventava così popolare. E' molto gratificante vedere che il supporto al mio software si estende ai vari prodotti come i lettori portatili e i media server casalinghi. Inoltre è stato inserito nel progetto open source FFmpeg.
Bodom: Qual'è il futuro di "WavPack"?
David: La prossima versione avrà l'implementazione della qualità della modalità ibrida con il dynamic noise shaping (che significa definizione dinamica del rumore). Io ho aggiuntyo altre nuove funzioni ai plugin di Winamp (adesso disponibili come alpha version). Per me, il più interessante funzione di wavPack hybrid mode è la distribuzione e il salvataggio di audio con alta qualità (24/96) alcontrario dei datalossy che perdono un sacco di qualità.
Bodom: I tuoi futuri progetti?
David: Circa 5 mesi fà, I ho inizaito a lavorare per l'apertura della mia azienda www.livescribre.com, che ha iniziato a vendere i primi prodotti: una penna per registrare ed ascoltare musica oltre che per scrivere e può fare tutto insieme. E' un lavoro così eccitante ma che mi lascia poco tempo per WavPack.
Bodom: Perchè non hai utilizzato una licenza Open Source per WavPack?
David: Io presumo che tu voglia dire Gpl license, perchè io utilizzo un altra licenza open source la BSD. Io ho scelto BSD licenze perchè i desideravo usare WavPack in maniera libera sia per scopi commerciali che non commerciali. La Gpl è generalmente non è una buona scelta per i prodotti commerciali.
Bodom: Che cosa pensi dell'OGG Vorbis?
David: Non lo usata mai, perchè ovviamente utilizzo WavPack, ma i sono felice di vedere che sta iniziando ad essere supportato nei lettori portatili. E' una gran cosa avere una alternativa libera e open source ai "big boys" (si riferisce a Mp3 ed AAc).
Bodom: Che cosa ne pensi dell'open source?
David: Non credo che la questione sia l'open source. Io penso che l'open source è grande, infatti uso Linux a Casa, ma penso che non c'è niente di sbagliato nei software commerciali e semmai avessi un idea per un software in futuro, proverei a vederla. Invece ritengo fondamentale la presenza e lo sviluppo di standard aperti. Io penso che i formati propretari sono inerenti al monopolio e non facciano bene al pubblico, e sono stato felice di vedere che anche i governi stiano pensando ai loro affari, come lo stato del Massachusetts, imponendo (in quella che potremmo chiamare la pubblica amministrazione) i formati aperti.
Bodom: Vuoi aggiungere qualcosa per il pubblico di tiempolibresite.com?
David: I sono stato sorpreso che l'Italia e una grande quantità di visitatori stranieri vista il stio Wavpack. In passato erano Tedeschi e Giapponesi, ma l'italia non era altrettanto consistente. Adesso riesci a battere le visite di entrambi i paesi. Così Io ho solo da ringraziare il pubblico italiano per il suo supporto e le sue donazioni. Molti anni fà visitai l'Italia (Milano, e Venezia) e davvero mi è piaciuto molto il colore degli italiani e la bellezza della vostra nazione. Sono sicuro che uno di questi giorni di tornare nuovamente in Italia insieme a mia moglie.
