Doom9: You're welcome.

 

Bodom: You are for me, and many italian the "guru" of ripping and encoding divx, i like your site and i always visit it since 2001/2002.

Doom9: If we'd be talking face to fact I'd probably blush now - it may well have been that at some time I was into a lot of what is going on, but if I look around the forum today, there are so many areas where I'd have to read a guide myself to get started. The whole subject matter has grown so large that I do not think there'll be one single person who can claim he/she is very proficient in every area. If you are, e.g. into DVD authoring, the whole MPEG-4 area might not be so interesting, etc.

 

Bodom: Who is the founder of doom9.org? Age, Name, Native Town and your job.. We want a gossip

Doom9: Especially in today's climate with lawsuits, disappearing software (DVD Decrypter gone, RipIt4Me gone, PSL2 Plugin gone, FixVTS and MenuEdit stopped), DMCA takedowns (BackupHDDVD on sourceforge and the hddvdkeys.com website) I want a clear cut between my online persona and my real life. I may or may not be in the MPAA crosshairs, but I certainly won't make life easier for anybody trying to come knocking at my door.

 

Bodom: Is there a site to which you are inspired for making doom9?

Doom9: Not really.. it's the lack of a site with the information I was looking for, and encouragement from college buddies that got me started.

 

Bodom: how and why Do you make doom9?

Doom9: The why is outlined in my About section and it has not changed. I'm not sure the how is interesting.. it used to be wordpad, nowadays it's a html editor and hypersnap. I still spend 30+ minutes each day reading various websites looking for information that is related to my subject matter. Over the years, I've found that more topics than just new software is of interest to me, and could be for other people, so that's why I got into reporting about legal affairs. And naturally, any potential successor to DVD is of interest as well.

Bodom: Why doom9 has a version for every language and as they are managed?

Doom9: As much as I'd like, there's a market for people who do not speak English well enough to follow the information and news posted on my site - so when I started getting requests for some of my documents to be translated into another language, I thought why not try and get my site up and running in another language, rather than just giving out bits and pieces of the information I've gathered and have it spread over various foreign language sites.
There is always one person in charge of a mirror - that person is in charge of coordinating translations, and gets information about all documents that are uploaded/removed/changed on my site on a daily basis. The same person is also responsible that my news are translated in a timely fashion, as regular news is the main reason why people keep coming back on a daily basis.
In recent years, my move from college life to professional life has reduced the amount of time available, and thus I'm not always as active in looking after the mirrors as I'd like to, resulting in a situation where not every mirror is necessarily up-to-date
Basically a mirror gets all the content, has to use my design, and provide their own website hosting - other than that whomever is in charge of a mirror can pretty much run their own show - they are even allowed some liberties as to the main page design (e.g. ads to cover hosting costs).

 

Bodom: Which the future objective and developments of doom9?
Doom9: Well - I'm not going to spill the beans here, but I guess it's reasonable to assume that there will be more codec comparisons and that sooner or later the HD format topic will be more than just news items.

Bodom: For General Talking: What do you think about file-sharing?

Doom9: I haven't used any P2P tools since the original Napster, so I'm only really up-to-date on the legal affairs surrounding P2P, and not what is out there and how convenient it is to get content these days. From a legal standpoint, sharing content with the whole wide world has always been problematic even under pre DMCA legislation, whereas the legality of downloading still varies between countries. I think that the RIAA committed a big blunder when they get rid of Napster back in the day. While Napster was on hiatus, there were rumors about Napster coming back in its original form, but for a small monthly cost (I'm not sure how much exactly.. I believe in the $10 area though it might have been as much as $20). In tracking downloads, that money could then be distributed amongst the artists. The industry would've gotten a new revenue stream overnight, and basically made money with any effort on their part (bandwidth was cheap even back in the day), and users could keep on using the service they've gotten to love. The burden of finding a proper source, download speed, proper naming, finding whole albums in the same quality - all that would remain up to the user.

Instead, the industry did nothing, and in that vacuum, several alternatives developed. Even today, the majority of industry sanctioned download sources are DRM infected, resulting in a situation where you either have to strip the DRM with all that entails, or buy the same thing over and over again to cover all the devices you own. It is thus no surprise that P2P filesharing is still prevalent. I believe that the industry still has to learn the lesson that they won't regain as much control over the market as they used to have, and I have my doubts that we'll enter a DRM free age any time soon - it's simply too lucrative to charge people over and over for the same thing (it is the holy grail of any copyright industry). And even if they do get paid (allofmp3), for a service that has a reasonable price (hence the popularity), the industry has nothing better to do than go after it.
If iPods ever lose their popularity, all those songs that Apple is peddling today will backfire big time - consumers will finally wake up and realize they've paid good money for a less than good product. And while leglsiation generally favors the industry, politicians will have a hard time overlooking millions of upset consumers.

Bodom: What is the future of divx and xvid? The divx or xvid is still the best? There is a best alternative?

Doom9: You should ask DXN and the XviD team about that. DXN is very tight lipped about going beyond MPEG-4 ASP, and we know XviD AVC should've been out a long time ago. The HD format war will set back mainstream adoption of MPEG-4 AVC for several years, but HDTV and IPTV simply require more efficient codecs than MPEG-2 so MPEG-4 AVC will be a big part of the video future and it remains to be seen if DXN will expand the DivX universe accordingly. I believe that in a few years, standalone players will handle high def AVC content on DVD (or successor formats) you create on your own. The format war has the potential to slow down this development, but in the end it is inevitable. Even today, we have iPods, PSPs, consoles, hardware acceleration in modern GFX cards - so I think in a few years, MPEG-4 ASPs current popularity will swap over to MPEG-4 AVC. If you look at my last codec comparison that is over a year old now, AVC codecs already dominated, and development has continued since - and more powerful machines have become available that make up for the speed loss you incurr when switching from ASP to AVC.

Bodom: Where is the number of doom9.org? (unique visitors, seen pages and other) Where is the best recognition of these years?

Doom9: I'm not a big fan of boasting with numbers - once the counter I used refused to work because I had too many hits, I switched to webserver stats. At this point, my site is distributed over multiple servers and I do not have statistics on every server, but when I extrapolate the numbers from a few servers, the site gets somewhere in the range of 1.2 to 1.5 million unique visitors a month. That number tends to vary a lot over the months - December and January are usually our strongest months.
The forum probably makes about as much as well, but in the absence of cookies (most forum visitors are not members), I suspect there are a lot more repeat customers than on the site itself.

Bodom: The project doom9 is the most famous of the web, you would be you expected this success?

Doom9: Well, I'd have to disagree on the most famous.. my site is small by comparison to really major sites out there, and I have no clue how we stand compared to the other big DVD sites out there today - I know years ago, traffic wise we were in third place, but in the end I don't think the goal is to become the most popular - I much rather have the site that is the most useful to my visitors. It is unfortunate that today, the main site is not fully up-to-date guide wise, but I believe the forum is definitely the most valuable resource for the topics that are deal with therein and I want to thank all the people that have made this possible - we have a high concentration of knowledgeable people that come back to help others and this is not a given. Many discussion forum suffers from having just a few knowledgeable people, and if those have other matters to deal with, the forum just turns into a place where the same question is asked again and again.
And no, I never expected that kind of popularity, and it wasn't something I was working towards over the years. If you told me tomorrow that I suddenly had 10 million visitors, that would be great (and we have seen massive spikes when certain stories break - if your number of active users increases more than twofold it's not only exciting, it also gets you worried that the hardware might not be up to the task) but I'd hope those people were as happy with what they're getting as the 1.x million gets today. I have been online ever since Mosaic was used the surf the web, and I've seen sites come and go, and sites whose focus dramatically shifted as the numbers increased (no longer targeting a knowledgeable audience but instead targeting the lowest common denominator) and I hope that once the site turns 10, the old timers that are still interested in the topic will still visit and not have left for other sites that better cover my original goals when I started out.

Bodom: other things for the pubblic of tiempolibresite.com?

Doom9: Do not forget that the freedoms we enjoy today as far as digital content is concerned are endangered: The content industry is on on a massive global war against consumer freedoms - just because you can backup DVDs today doesn't mean that it's always going to be like that. In the past few weeks, important tools that permit DVD backups have been squashed by legal onslaughts, so if you don't want to wake up one day and find that you now have to pay once to play a movie on your HDDVD/Blu-ray player, then another time to play it in the DVD player in your bedroom, another time to play it on your PS and yet another time to play the same thing on your video iPod, don't just sit back, but actively engage in ongoing efforts by consumer organizations to fight for your rights. I try to mention ongoing efforts in the news as much as possible and hope that babaz - the guy in charge of the Italian mirror - will bring you additional news that only concerns Italy www.doom9.it.
Likewise, the massive extension of copyright laws endanger sites like mine where you can get information on how to use legitimately purchased content as you see fit. Soon, your access to my site will be logged 24/7 thanks to the EU's massive data dragnet (also known as the EU data retention initiative).. now all it takes is to criminalize information that can be abused for copyright infringement, and suddenly you'll be visited by the police in the middle of the night, just because you made a copy of "Lion King" for your daugher to protect the original against scratches, dirt and teeth.

Doom9: Se ci parlassimo faccia a faccia probabilmente starei arrossendo. C’è stato un certo momento in cui ero molto interessato a cosa stava accadendo, ma se guardo il forum oggi, ci sono alcune aree in cui dovrei leggere anch’io delle guide per poter iniziare il lavoro. Il sito è diventato così grande che non penso ci sia una singola persona che potrà affermare di essere il più competente in ogni settore. Se tu andassi, per esempio, nella DVD authoring, l’intera area MPEG-4 potrebbe non essere così interessante…

Doom9: Specialmente nel clima di oggi con molti processi, stanno scomparendo dei software (DVD Decrypter andato, RipIt4Me andato, PSL2 Plugin andato, FixVTS e MenuEdit fermati), DMCA buttato giù (BackupHDDVD nella fonte e la hddvdkeys.com website). Doom9: Non proprio… è la mancanza di un sito con le informazioni che stavo cercando e l’incoraggiamento dei compagni di college che mi aiutarono a iniziare.

Bodom: Come e perché hai creato doom9?
Doom9: Il perché è sottolineato nella mia sezione About e non è ancora cambiato. Non sono sicuro che il come sia interessante…ero abituato a usare wordpad, oggigiorno è un html editor e hypersnap. Passo ancora 30 minuti ogni giorno leggendo diversi website, cercando informazioni legate al tema del sito. Nel corso degli anni, ho trovato più temi che nuovi software interessanti per me e che potrebbero esserlo per altre persone, ecco perché io sto entrando nella segnalazione circa le questione giuridiche. E, naturalmente, ogni potenziale successore dei DVD è interessante comunque.

Bodom: perché doom9 ha una versione per ogni lingua e come sono gestite?
Doom9: C’è una parte di persone che non parlano sufficientemente bene inglese per seguire le informazioni e le news presenti sul mio sito. Quindi quando ho iniziato a ricevere richieste di traduzione in altre lingue per alcuni dei miei documenti, pensai: perché non provare e far girare il mio sito in un'altra lingua, piuttosto che dare briciole o informazioni limitate. Ho raccolto e aperto svariati siti in lingua straniera. C’è sempre una persona incaricata di gestire un mirror, questa persona è incaricata della coordinazione delle traduzioni e della raccolta di informazioni circa tutti i documenti che sono caricati/rimossi/cambiati sul mio sito quotidianamente. La stessa persona è anche responsabile che le mie news siano tradotte giornalmente, perché delle news regolari sono la ragione principale per cui la gente ritorna ogni giorno. Negli ultimi anni, il passaggio dalla vita del college alla vita professionale ha ridotto la quantità di tempo disponibile, e per questo non sono sempre attivo nella cura dei mirror come vorrei, con la conseguenza che non tutti i mirror sono necessariamente aggiornati.
Fondamentalmente un gestore del mirror prende tutti i contenuti, rispecchiando il mio design, provvede al suo website hosting. A parte questo, l’incaricato di un mirror può gestire il sito con il proprio stile. Ai mirror sono concesse alcune libertà, come il design della pagina principale (esempio: annunci pubblicitari per coprire i costi dell’hosting).

Bodom: Quali sono gli sviluppi e gli obiettivi futuri di doom9?
Doom9: Allora… non ho intenzione di svelarli qui, ma ritengo che ci saranno più confronti nei codec e che presto o tardi il topic sul formato HD sarà più di una semplice news.

Bodom: Parlando in generale: cosa ne pensi del file-sharing?
Doom9: Non ho usato nessun P2P dall’originale Napster, quindi non sono proprio aggiornato sulle vicende legali intorno al P2P, non so cosa succeda là fuori e quanto sia comodo essere soddisfatti in questi giorni. Sotto il punto di vista legale, lo sharing unito all’intero Wide Word è sempre stato problematico, anche prima della legislazione DMCA, mentre le leggi sul download sono diverse tra i vari paesi. Penso che la RIAA commetta un grande errore quando tenta di eliminare Napster. Mentre Napster era sofferente, c’erano delle notizie riguardanti il fatto che Napster potesse tornare alla sua forma originale, ma per una piccola somma mensile (non sono sicuro di quanto esattamente, credo 10$ in alcune aree benché potesse arrivare a 20$). Inseguendo i download questa cifra può essere distribuita tra gli artisti. L'industria avrebbe ottenuto un nuovo flusso del reddito e fondamentalmente fare dei soldi con ogni sforzo dalla loro parte (la larghezza della banda è sempre più a buon mercato), e gli utenti potrebbero mantenere il servizio che hanno amato tanto. La difficoltà di individuare la sorgente corretta, la velocità di connessione, il nome esatto, interi album nella stessa qualità, tutto questo può rimanere agli utenti.
Invece, l’industria non fa nulla e in questo vuoto e si sviluppano diverse alternative. Anche oggi, la maggioranza delle industrie sanciscono che le fonti di download sono DRM infetti, con la conseguenza di dover mettere a nudo il DRM con tutte le sue implicazioni, o comprare la stessa cosa nuovamente per ricoprire tutti i dispositivi che si possiedono. Non è quindi una sorpresa che il P2P file-sharing sia ancora molto diffuso. Credo che le industrie debba ancora imparare che non possono più riottenere così tanto controllo del mercato come lo erano in precedenza e ho dei dubbi che entreranno liberamente in DRM in qualunque momento. È più facile aumentare continuamente le spese alle persone per la stessa cosa (che è il santo Graal per qualsiasi industria del copyright). E anche se si facessero pagare (allofmp3) per un servizio che abbia un prezzo ragionevole (quindi popolarità), le industrie non hanno nulla di meglio da fare.
Se gli iPod dovessero perdere mai la loro popolarità, tutte quelle canzoni che Apple sta vendendo gli si ritorceranno contro, i consumatori finalmente si sveglieranno e realizzeranno che hanno pagato dei bei soldi per meno di un buon prodotto. E mentre la legislazione generalmente favorisce l’industria, i politici avranno un periodo difficile controllando milioni di consumatori scioccati.

 

Bodom: Qual è il futuro di Divx e Xvid? Divx e Xvid sono ancora il meglio? Esiste una alternativa migliore?

Doom9: Dovresti chiederlo a DXN (Divx Network) e Xvid team a proposito di ciò. DXN è andando oltre all’ MPEG-4 ASP e noi sappiamo che Xvid AVC sarebbe dovuto sparire molto tempo fa. La guerra sul formato HD porterà alla riadozione di MPEG-4 per alcuni anni, ma HDTV e IPTV richiedono dei codec più efficienti che MPEG-2 e MOEG-4 AVC, saranno una grossa parte del video del futuro e ci rimane di vedere se DXN espanderà l’universo Xvid di conseguenza. Credo che in pochi anni, i programmatori autonomi si occuperanno della alta definizione AVC contenuto in DVD ( o successivi formati) creando uno proprio formato. La guerra sui formati può potenzialmente rallentare questo sviluppo, ma alla fine sarà inevitabile. Anche oggi abbiamo IPod, PSP, console, acceleratori Hardware nelle moderne GFX card; quindi penso che in pochi anni, MPEG-4 ASP oggi popolare sarà rimpiazzato da MPEG-4 AVC. Se guardi i miei ultimi codec, che sono vecchi di un anno, capisci che gli AVC codec dominano tutt’oggi. Il loro sviluppo è continuo e macchine molto più potenti sono diventate disponibili e queste compensano la perdita di velocità in cui si incorre quando si passa da ASP a AVC.

 

Bodom: Quali sono i numeri di doom9.org (visitatori unici, pagine viste, altro)? Qual è stato il miglior riconoscimento in questi anni?
Doom9: Io non sono un grande fan dell’ostentare numeri, una volta il contatore che usavo si è rifiutato di lavorare perché ho avuto troppe viste, e sono passato allo stato del web server. A questo punto, il mio sito è distribuito su molti server e non ho molte statistiche su ogni server, ma quando ho estrapolato i numeri da alcuni server, ne è risultato che il sito ha avuto una gamma di 1,2 fino a 1,5 milioni di visitatori unici in un mese. Questo numero tende a variare ogni mese. Dicembre e gennaio sono solitamente i nostri mesi “forti”. Il forum probabilmente fa gli stessi risultati, ma in assenza di cookie (molti visitatori del forum non sono membri), sospetto che ci siano molti di più utenti ripetuti che sul sito stesso.

Doom9: Allora… non sono d’accordo sul più famoso… il mio sito è piccolo rispetto ai grandi siti, e non capisco come noi possiamo confrontarci con i grandi siti su DVD oggi. So che anni fa, per quantità di traffico noi eravamo al terzo posto, ma alla fine non penso che l’obbiettivo sia quello di diventare i più popolari, penso piuttosto che sia avere il sito più funzionale per i miei visitatori. Sfortunatamente oggi il sito principale non è completamente aggiornato, ma ritengo che il forum è decisamente la più importante risorsa per i suoi topic che hanno a che fare con tutto e vorrei ringraziare tutte le persone che hanno reso questo possibile. Abbiamo a disposizione un’alta concentrazione di persone che conoscono la materia, che tornano per aiutare altre persone e questo non è dovuto. Molte discussioni sui forum soffrono perché ci sono poche persone che conoscono e se queste persone dovessero avere altre cose da fare, il forum ritorna un posto dove la stessa domanda è chiesta ancora e ancora.
E no, non mi aspettavo questa popolarità e non era una cosa alla quale lavoravo in questi anni. Se mi avessi detto domani avrai improvvisamente 10 milioni di visitatori, che sarebbe grande (e abbiamo visto punte voluminose quando certe storie si sono rotte) se il tuo numero di visitatori cresce del doppio non è solo eccitante ma ti preoccupa perché non sai se il tuo hardware è in grado di reggere. Ma io spero che queste persone siano felici tanto quanto stanno rendendo felici 1,X milioni di ospiti. Sono sempre stato online da quando Mosaic era stato usato per navigare, ho visto siti andare e venire e siti che si ponevano come obiettivo l’aumento del numero di visitatori (non rivolgendosi più a persone che conoscono la materia ma a gente qualunque) e spero che un giorno il sito giri al massimo, che i veterani che sono interessati ai topic ci visitino ancora e non ci lascino per altri siti che hanno raggiunto meglio i miei obiettivi originali di quando sono partito.

Bodom: Vuoi dire qualcosa al pubblico di timpolibresite.com?
Doom9: Non dimenticate che la libertà di cui noi oggi godiamo, per quanto riguarda i contenuti digitali è in pericolo di estinzione: l’obiettivo delle industrie è quello di una massiva guerra globale contro la libertà dei consumatori, solo perché oggi si può fare un backup dei DVD non significa che tutto vada sempre così. Nelle ultime due settimane, importanti tools che permettono di fare backup di DVD sono stati distrutti da attacchi legali, quindi se non vi volete svegliare un giorno e trovarvi a dover pagare quando volete vedere un film sul tuo HDDVD/Blue-ray player, e pagare un’altra volta per vedere un DVD in camera da letto, ancora pagare per giocare sulla PS e ancora pagare per vedere un video sull’iPod, non rimanete seduti, siate attivi nel partecipare ai continui sforzi delle associazioni dei consumatori per difendere i vostri diritti.
Cerco di menzionare i continui sforzi nelle mie news il più possibile e spero che questo “babaz” ( il ragazzo che si occupa del mirror italiano) vi fornisca nuove news che riguardino solo l’Italia.
Ugualmente, la massima estensione delle leggi sul copyright mette in pericolo siti come il mio dove potete avere informazioni su come usare legittimamente ciò che avete comprato. Presto il vostro accesso sul mio sito sarà loggato 24/7 grazie alle massive data dragnet dell’UE (anche conosciute come “iniziativa di ritegno dei dati”). Oggi tutti cercano di criminalizzare l’informazione che può essere abusata per la rottura del copyright, e improvvisamente potete ricevere la visita della polizia nel bel mezzo della notte, solo perché avete fatto una copia de “Il Re leone” per vostra figlia per proteggere l’originale dalle graffiature, dallo sporco e dai denti.
