Bodom – Puoi parlare di te e del vostro progetto Backup4all al pubblico italiano di tiempolibresite.com?

CS – Innanzitutto grazie a voi per questa intervista. Mi chiamo Claudiu Spulber e rappresento il dipartimento marketing della Softland, la società che sviluppa Backup4all.
Backup4all, come suggerisce il nome (lo spero!), è un’utility per copie di sicurezza che permette agli utenti di proteggere i propri dati da guasti hardware, furti ed altre minacce. So che molti utenti pensano che l’hardware sia molto attualmente affidabile, ma in realtà un guasto è solo questione di tempo. Certo, alcuni fra i nuovi dischi rigidi “rimandano” quei guasti, ma intervengono  attacchi da parte di virus, errori software oppure provocati dall’utente, e anche minacce di furto ad incrementare la probabilità di perdere dati importanti.
Per evitare ciò è importante fare il backup, dove Backup4all dà il meglio di sé. Non descriverò tutte le caratteristiche di Backup4all, ma ecco un piccolo elenco di ciò che esso fa: permette il filtro dei file, implementa un pianificatore, consente la copia su CD/DVD e verso FTP, supporta l’attribuzione di versione ad un file, la criptazione AES per i file .zip, la copia di file aperti, manda notifiche via e-mail e molto altro.

Bodom – Quando e come appare Backup4all?

CS – La Softland è un’impresa privata di sviluppo software che ha cominciato l’attività nel 1999. Una delle cose più importanti per un’azienda è il backup dei dati, di conseguenza hanno iniziato a cercare soluzioni per tenere al sicuro il proprio lavoro. Dopo aver provato diverse soluzioni poco adatte a garantire una buona sicurezza di backup, hanno cominciato lo sviluppo di un programma di backup per uso interno. Così, il progetto Backup4all ha preso il via all’inizio del 2000 e si è sviluppato fino a quando è stata realizzata la prima versione ufficiale di Backup4all (versione 1.0.0), il 20 dicembre 2002. Questa versione fu rilasciata come utility freeware. Valeriodean – Cosa ha influenzato la vostra decisione di portare avanti un software come Backup4all?

CS – Dopo il rilascio di Backup4all con licenza freeware, il programma non ci mise molto a diventare popolare fra le applicazioni di backup. La popolarità portò sempre più utenti, che cominciarono a chiedere supporto e altre caratteristiche. Quindi, doveva essere presa una decisione: continuare lo sviluppo di Backup4all oppure fermarsi e lasciarlo com’era. Ovviamente il progetto continuò, e dopo aver nominato una squadra di sviluppatori che lavorasse a tempo pieno a Backup4all, la Softland decise anche di passare ad una licenza shareware e di svoltare così verso la strada della commercializzazione. Backup4all è stato continuamente messo alla prova, e caratteristiche sempre nuove sono state aggiunte sulla scorta dei suggerimenti ricevuti dai nostri clienti. Perciò, tornando alla tua domanda iniziale, la Softland ha deciso di continuare il progetto grazie agli utenti – fornire soluzioni migliori e rispettare i nostri clienti è parte integrante della nostra mentalità.

Bodom – Perché il nome del progetto è Backup4all?

CS – Scommetto che il nome in Italiano significa “Backup per tutti”. Uno dei punti più forti è il fatto che esso può essere utilizzato con facilità anche dai principianti, o fortemente personalizzato dai professionisti del computer. Infatti, è una soluzione di backup per ogni tipo di utente, dal principiante al professionista.

Valeriodean – Perché ci sono tre versioni di Backup4all?

CS – Recentemente (6 febbraio 2006) abbiamo rilasciato la versione 3.0 di Backup4all, un aggiornamento della versione precedente, la 2.3.4.
Rilasciamo nuove versioni principalmente perché implementiamo nuove opzioni. Ma il fatto che esista la versione 3 non significa che abbiamo realizzato solo 3 versioni di Backup4all. Insieme alla “versione 3”  c’è anche il numero di configurazione (build number), che attualmente è 186. Quel 186 sta a significare che, fin dalla realizzazione della prima versione stabile di Backup4all 3, abbiamo creato 186 nuove configurazioni (per la versione precedente ce ne furono 762). Il processo è questo: se correggiamo dei difetti di programmazione, oppure miglioriamo determinate caratteristiche, rilasciamo una nuova configurazione. La nuova configurazione passa attraverso una fase di test, e se tutto è a posto viene rispedita al settore sviluppo e dopo aver corretto gli errori viene creata una nuova configurazione.
Tutto è molto dinamico, perché vogliamo fornire ai nostri utenti la soluzione migliore.

Valeriodean – Tutti sanno che il “log project” alla fine diventa noioso… perciò, com’è cambiato il vostro approccio a Backup4all rispetto al primo mese di lavoro? Cosa farete nei prossimi anni? Qual è il futuro di Backup4all?

CS - Backup4all continuerà ad essere sviluppato, e noi aggiungeremo nuove caratteristiche, migliorando quelle esistenti in base alle richieste degli utenti.
Confrontando lo stato attuale del progetto Backup4all con quello del primo mese, vedo che abbiamo fatto molta strada. Backup4all cresce ad un ritmo veloce quanto la crescita del suo database utenti.

Bodom – Quante persone lavorano al progetto? Chi sono? Cosa stanno facendo adesso?

CS – Nel progetto Backup4all sono coinvolte dieci persone: quattro sviluppatori, tre nel gruppo di supporto e due al marketing. Il gruppo di supporto ha a che fare con le questioni tecniche che si presentano, raccoglie i suggerimenti degli utenti e spedisce gli errori di programmazione individuati e le richieste di nuove caratteristiche al gruppo di sviluppo. Questo si incarica di implementare tutto ciò in Backup4all e di testare e rilasciare nuove versioni.
Il gruppo marketing ha a che fare con gli aspetti promozionali di Backup4all.

Valeriodean – Pensandoci adesso, dal momento in cui Backup4all prese vita nella tua mente fino ad oggi… qual è l’errore che non rifaresti?

CS – Non posso rispondere a questa domanda, semplicemente perché ci sono state molte persone coinvolte nello sviluppo di Backup4all fin dall’inizio. Io so che se queste hanno fatto qualcosa di tecnicamente sbagliato, ciò è stato corretto subito dopo. Dal mio punto di vista, l’errore che non commetteremo più sarà scegliere una “certa” società di hosting (ma non voglio fare nomi in questa sede) .

Valeriodean – Avete realizzato tutti i vostri obiettivi con Backup4all, oppure avete dovuto accettare dei compromessi durante la realizzazione di Backup4all come appare al giorno d’oggi? Se sì, qual è stato il più difficile da accettare?
CS – Gli unici compromessi che abbiamo accettato nella realizzazione del progetto Backup4all sono stati quelli col nostro tempo libero. Non possiamo concepire dei compromessi nella qualità di Backup4all o in quella dei nostri servizi.

Bodom – Vorrei farti una domanda cattiva: perché scegliere Backup4all?

CS – Non esistono “domande cattive”.
Perché scegliere Backup4all? Beh, prima di tutto è una questione di fiducia. La gente sceglie un certo programma in base ai suggerimenti ricevuti dagli amici o da altre fonti degne di fiducia (riviste, giornali, comunità di utenti). Backup4all ha ricevuto un gran numero di premi ed è stato anche analizzato da professionisti (di Smartcomputing, PC Magazine, WUGNET, Herald, Lockergnome) giunti alla conclusione che Backup4all è davvero una buona scelta (abbiamo messo on line i loro giudizi all’indirizzo http://www.backup4all.com/reviews.php).
In secondo luogo, è una questione di supporto. Noi rispondiamo velocemente e con accuratezza. In più, se un utente segnala un difetto di programmazione di Backup4all e noi lo riscontriamo, realizziamo al più presto una nuova configurazione per dare a quell’utente una soluzione al suo problema. Perché è tutto qui, fornire ai nostri utenti la soluzione migliore.
In terzo luogo, c’è il fatto che Backup4all è davvero facile da usare. Lo abbiamo architettato in modo intuitivo, con l’aiuto dei nostri utenti. Una volta installato, è possibile utilizzare un wizard che farà da guida attraverso il processo di backup. Ci vogliono solo pochi minuti per avere una completa e automatizzata soluzione di backup.
L’ultimo (ma non meno importante) aspetto è quello tecnico. Backup4all è presente in tre edizioni: Lite, Standard e Professional. Quello che abbiamo fatto è stato il raggruppare le caratteristiche in modo da fornire ad ognuno la soluzione di cui ha bisogno. L’edizione Professional soddisfa al meglio le esigenze delle aziende o degli utenti che cercano un’applicazione per il backup con il massimo numero di opzioni. Per gli utenti non professionali o che non hanno bisogno di tutte le caratteristiche della versione Professional, le soluzioni giuste sono le edizioni Lite o Standard.

Bodom – State lavorando a qualche altro progetto? Se sì, quale?

CS – Sì, c’è  un altro progetto shareware a cui stiamo lavorando. Si chiama novaPDF. novaPDF (http://www.novapdf.com) è un driver di stampa PDF, il che significa poter generare file PDF da qualsiasi applicazione per Windows che supporti la stampa.

Valeriodean -  Vuoi dire un nome (o soprannome) che appartiene ad una persona a cui ti viene in mente ogni volta che pensi al progetto Backup4all?

CS – Beh, è un progetto di gruppo, perciò quando tu dici Backup4all io penso all’intera squadra che qui lavora con l’obiettivo di migliorarlo. E’ difficile fare un nome in particolare.

Bodom – Siete felici del successo del vostro software?

CS – Sì. La base degli utenti di Backup4all cresce di continuo, e noi faremo del nostro meglio per mantenerlo su questa strada.

Valeriodean – In che misura Backup4all ha influenzato le vostre vite private?

CS – Non mi spingerei tanto nel dire che abbia influenzato le nostre vite, ma posso dire che ha modificato il nostro status. Quando ricevi commenti da parte di utenti che lodano Backup4all, si prova una certa gioia nel pensare di essere stati capaci di partecipare a questo, e momenti simili semplicemente “fanno il tuo giorno” (espressione variamente traducibile: in questo caso, può essere reso come “ti fanno sentire a posto”, N.d.T.).

Bodom – Altro da dire al pubblico italiano?

CS – Beh, invito tutti a provare Backup4all, sono certo che non se ne pentiranno. La versione 2 è localizzata in Italiano e stiamo approntando gli ultimi ritocchi alla localizzazione italiana anche per la versione 3.
Come nota personale, vorrei dire che l’Italia è uno dei Paesi più belli che io abbia mai visitato. Sono certo che voi tutti lo sappiate.

Bodom = Can you speak about you and your project Backup4all for the Italian public of tiempolibresite.com?

C.S. = First of all thank you for this interview. My name is Claudiu Spulber and I represent the marketing department of Softland, the company that develops Backup4all.

Backup4all, as the name suggests it (I hope!), is a backup utility that allows users protect their data against hardware failure, theft or other threats. I know that many users think hardware is reliable this days but actually it's only a matter of time until they crash. Of course, some of the new hard drives "delay" that crash but this is where virus attacks, software or user errors, even theft threats intervene and increase the probability of losing your important data.

To avoid this backing up is important, and this is where Backup4all does its best. I will not describe all the features of Backup4all, but here is a small list of what it does: allows file filtering, has built-in scheduler, allows backing up to CD/DVD, backs up to FTP, supports file versioning, AES encryption for the zip files, backs up open files, sends email notifications and much more.

Bodom = When and How Backup4all appeared?

C.S.= Softland is a privately held software development company that started the activity in 1999. One of the most important things in a company is backing up, thus they’ve started searching for solutions to have their work secured. After several solutions that were unable to provide good backup security, they’ve started developing a backup program for internal use. So the Backup4all project first started at the beginning of 2000 and it evolved to the point where on 20-Dec-2002 the first version of Backup4all was officially released (version 1.0.0). It was released as a freeware utility. And with the help of the Wayback Machine you can see how the website looked back then http://web.archive.org/web/20021223071414/http://www.backup4all.com/

Valeriodean = What has influenced to your decision to make the progress of software like Backup4all?

C.S.= After Backup4all was released under the freeware license, it didn’t take long to become popular among backup applications. Popularity brought more and more users, and they started asking for more features and for support. Thus a decision needed to be made, either continue the development of Backup4all or stop and leave it as it was. Obviously the project continued, and after assigning a team of developers to work full-time for Backup4all, Softland decided also to change the license to shareware, thus switching to the commercial route. Backup4all is being improved continuously and more and more features are added depending on the feedback we receive from users. So back to your initial question, Softland decided to continue the project because of Backup4all’s users - it’s part of our mentality to provide better solutions and to respect our customers.

Bodom = Why the name of the project is "backup4all"?

C.S. = It means “backup for all”, and in Italian I guess it would be “backup per tutti”. One of the strong points of Backup4all is the fact that it can be easily used by novice users, or powerfully tweaked by computer professionals. So it’s indeed a backup solution for all users, from novice to professionals.
Valeriodean = Why make three release of backup4all?
We have recently (6-Feb-2006) released version 3.0 of Backup4all, a major update from the previous version, 2.3.4.
We are releasing new versions mainly because we incorporate new features. But version 3 doesn’t mean that we’ve released only 3 versions of Backup4all. With the “version 3” comes also the build number, which currently is 186. What 186 means is that since the first stable version of Backup4all 3, we have created 186 new builds (for the previous version there were 762 new builds). The process is this, if we correct bug reports or if we improve certain features we release a new build. That new build goes through testing and if everything is fine we make it officially available – if it doesn’t pass some test we send it back to development and a new build is created after the errors are corrected.
It’s all very dynamic because we want to provide our users the best solution.

Valeriodean = All people know that the log project at the end became tedious... so, how is change your approach with Backup4all project respect the first month of job? What are you going to do in the next years? What's the future of the Backup4all project?

C.S. = Backup4all will continue to be developed and we will add more features and improve the existing ones in respect with our users’ requests. Comparing the state of the Backup4all project as it is now with its initial month I know we’ve come a long way. Backup4all is growing in the fast rhythm that its user database is growing too.
 
Bodom = How many people work to project? Who are? What are the doing?

C.S. = 10 people are involved in the Backup4al project: 4 developers, 3 in the support team and 2 for marketing. The support team handles the technical issues that appear, gathers feedback from users, sends bugs and feature requests to the development team. They are in charge of incorporating all this into Backup4all, testing and releasing new versions.
The marketing team handles the aspects of promoting Backup4all.
 
Valeriodean = If you think of this time, form the moment when the idea of Backup4all was born in your head till today... what's the error that you won't do again?

C.S.= I cannot answer that question simply because there were more people involved into developing Backup4all from the beginning. I know that if they did something technically wrong it was corrected soon after.
From my point of view the error that we won’t repeat is choosing a “certain” hosting company (I won’t disclose any names in here) .
 
Valeriodean = did you realize all your scopes with Backup4all or had you to accept some compromises during the Backup4allof present-day realization? If yes, what was the most difficult compromises that you had to accept?

C.S. = The only compromises we did in the Backup4all project were those with our own time. We cannot conceive compromises in the quality of Backup4all or in the quality of our services.
 
Bodom = I would like to ask you a bad question: Why choose backup4all?

C.S. = There is no such thing as “bad questions”.
Why choose Backup4all? Well first of all it’s a matter of trust. People will choose a certain program depending on the recommendations they get from their friends or from other trustful sources (magazines, newspapers, communities). Backup4all received a lot of awards and also was reviewed by professionals (from Smartcomputing, PC Magazine, WUGNET, Herald, Lockergnome) that concluded Backup4all is a very good choice (we put them online at http://www.backup4all.com/reviews.php).

Second it’s a matter of support. We answer fast and we give accurate answers. Plus if a user reports a bug in Backup4all and we confirm it, we release as soon as possible a new build to give that user a solution for his problem. Because this is what’s all about, giving our users the best solution.

Third is the fact that Backup4all is very easy to use. We’ve designed it in an intuitive manner, with the help of our users. Once you install it you can easily start a wizard that will guide you through the backup process. It just takes a few minutes to have a complete automated backup solution.

The last (but not the least) is the technical aspect. Backup4all comes in 3 editions: Lite, Standard and Professional. What we’ve did is grouping the features in such a manner that give you the solution you need. For companies or users looking for a fully featured backup application, the Professional edition suits them best. For home or other users that don’t need all the features of the Professional version, Lite or Standard are the solutions.

Bodom = Do you work in another project? If, yes what is this project?

C.S.= Yes, we do have another shareware project that we work on. It’s called novaPDF. novaPDF (http://www.novapdf.com/) is a PDF printer driver, meaning you can use it to generate PDF files from any Windows application that supports printing.

Valeriodean = do you want to have a name (nickname) which belongs to a person who you keep in mind any time you thinking of Backup4all project??

C. S. = Well this is a team project, thus when you say Backup4all I think at the entire team here working for the purpose to make it better. It’s hard to pick a particular name.
 
Bodom = Are you happy for the popularity of your software?

C.S. = Yes we are. Backup4all’s user base is continually increasing and we’ll do our best to keep it this way.

Valeriodean = how backup4all's project had influenced your private life?
C.S. = I wouldn’t go so far as saying it influenced our private lives, but I can tell you it influences our state. When you receive comments from users lauding Backup4all you feel a certain joy that you were able to participate in this, and such moments just “make your day”.
 
Bodom = Some other think for your Italian public?
C.S. = Well I invite them to test Backup4all, I’m sure they won’t regret it. Version 2 was localized in Italian and we’re making the final retouches to localize Backup4all 3 into Italian too.
As a personal note, I would say that Italy is one of the most beautiful countries that I visited. I’m sure you all know that.
